I saw your comments in the Washington Post article, and it was really interesting - some stuff I hadn't thought of before, about people changing their expectations of computer and software reliability. Home users are pretty much used to crashes and problems and all kind of stuff happening. But they expect /businesses/ to keep their products and services available at all times. Seems like that is where the pressure is. If I had to guess, I would say it would take a major catastrophic event that disrupts a great deal of business and government activity (for more than just a day or two) to bring about this sea change in the average person's outlook.
Of course businesses and government agencies may start looking for different things in their software before that, to protect themselves, but I don't know - after all, their employees are mostly average users. And anyone who's worked in an office knows how much trouble the IT guys have getting employees to do things like choose secure email passwords and change them on a regular basis, for example.
It's all very interesting to think about. Have you written or published anything that goes into more detail on these issues?
